Ramos family expands bookstore chain in HK

Metrobooks, the Hong Kong-based subsidiary of bilyonarya Socorro Ramos’ National Bookstore chain, has opened last December its fourth branch in the former British colony.

The newest outlet is located on the 9th and 10th floors of Times Square in Causeway Bay. It occupies 5,000 square feet of what is considered to be one of the prime locations in Hong Kong.

South China Morning Post, in an earlier report, quoted Metrobooks’ local manager Jenny Wong: “When the retail market was booming, all the good locations were occupied by luxury brands. We didn’t have a chance. This is the right time for us to expand.”

Metrobooks already had three stores–two in Tsim Sha Tsui and another one in San Po Kong.

The chain plans to roll out five to 10 more stores in Hong Kong over the next few years.

Having found its niche in the lucrative children’s books and educational products segment, the company said all stores are doing well, consistently posting double-digit growth over the past few years despite competition from the likes of Taiwanese bookstore chain Eslite.
