Globe invests $2B to bring fast wireless broadband service
Ayala-led Globe Telecom Inc. is upping the ante in its ongoing battle for customers and faster and more reliable broadband services to the public.
Globe announced Thursday it was spending about $2 billion over five years to roll out a fiber-to-the-home network in a bid to provide ultra-fast internet access to about two million homes nationwide by 2020.
Using cutting edge technology, fiber optic internet sends data faster than basic cable.
Information is delivered on a dedicated line, which facilitates more consistent speed than cable.
Often, it is considered more reliable as it is immune to many of the conditions that cable Internet is susceptible to.
The company has inked an agreement with the city government of Manila to roll out its fiber broadband technology in Binondo which will require an investment of at least $1 million.
With this partnership, about 5,000 new business and home subscribers are expected to enjoy internet speed of 1 Gbps, well above the 2 Mbps average provided by internet providers.
The project is targeted to be completed in the third quarter.
“With a fiber broadband technology in place, business establishments in Binondo will be able to utilize digital solutions that would enhance competitiveness, allowing these enterprises to operate more efficiently and expand their market reach. Our customers at home, on the other hand, will be able to download and upload large quantities of data, stream high-definition multi-media content, play online games, among other things, using multiple devices at faster speeds,” Globe chief commercial officer Albert de Larrazabal said.
De Larrazabal said this initiative was in line with Globe’s vision of “developing ‘connected communities’ where both enterprise clients and customers at home get to experience the full benefits of having world-class data connectivity.”
Plans also include the deployment of small cell technology which supports 3G and LTE in various parts of Binondo to expand network coverage and capacity.
