“Everybody said everything I’ve ever done was a hopelessly experimental exercise that would have no commercial value whatsoever,” George Lucas recalled when Forbes’ Randall Lane visited him at his Skywalker Ranch in 1996. Nevertheless, Lucas had proven himself a real business force. He was already worth over $2 billion after turning Star Wars into “the most profitable movie product in history.” And his digital animation studio, Industrial Light & Magic, had created blockbuster special effects for Jurassic Park and Forrest Gump.
