Joseph Calata starts greenhouse lettuce farming in Cavite

Agribusiness firm Calata Corp. has commenced construction of its first greenhouse model in Mendez, Cavite.

Of the 1,604 square meter greenhouse, 1,184 sqm will be planted with lettuce and 420 sqm with tomato using the “Grow Bag” system which utilizes coco peat and coco chips instead of soil.

The Grow Bag system makes the crops less susceptible to harmful microorganisms as a result of better sanitation. This would translate into maximized harvest of healthy grown crops.

“Currently, all land preparation including the laying of foundation has been completed. It is expected that all other construction materials which have been shipped from Israel shall arrive on July 25,” Calata said in a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange.

Estimated time of completion is three to four weeks from the first day of installation.
