Vitarich, PureFoods shares rocked by avian flu outbreak

Shares of Vitarich Corp. and San Miguel Pure Foods fell Monday following the first bird flu outbreak in the country.

Vitarich slipped 5.9 percent to P1.92 each share while PureFoods declined 3.8 percent or P10 to close at P305 apiece.

On Friday, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel “Manny” Piñol announced the outbreak was detected in a farm in Pampanga following tests conducted by the Bureau of Animal Industry and University of the Philippines Los Baños.

The DA ordered the slaughter of all chicken, ducks and quail within a kilometer of the infected poultry in San Luis, Pampanga.

The virus may have come from migratory birds or smuggled ducks from China, the DA said.
