Smartphone shipments slump in PH

Smartphone shipments in the Philippines fell 10 percent in the second quarter, according to data from IDC.

“The smartphone market declined compared to last year’s number due to downscaled local vendors, except Cherry Mobile and Cloudfone, as they face tougher competition from Chinese vendors,” IDC said.

Local vendors saw their market share decline to 41 percent in the second quarter from 49 percent in the same period a year ago.

Global vendors’ share of the Philippine smartphone market remained flat at 27 percent, with only Samsung as the only strong performer.

Cherry Mobile emerged as the top local smartphone vendor. It was followed by Samsung, Oppo, Cloudfone and Vivo.

IDC expects shipments to pick up in the last quarter as the Christmas season kicks in.
