What can P1K get you? The entire ERC budget for 2018
The Energy Regulatory Commission will not be able to afford to pay even the electric bill of a small household after the House of Representatives approved a paltry P1,000 for its budget in 2018.
Zamboanga City first-district Rep. Celso Lobregat, a vice chair of the House committee on appropriations, himself moved for the chamber to approve the meager budget, which met with approval from others in the chamber.
The original budget proposed for ERC under the National Expenditure Program was P350.9 million.
Davao City first-district Rep. Karlo Nograles, chairman of the committee on appropriations, said there was a general sentiment among House members that the ERC “really needs to fix a lot of problems besetting their office so the Speaker and the House saw it fit to give them a P1,000 budget.”
“The ERC has up to the end of the budget process to resolve the issues and controversies hounding their office in order that Congress might reconsider restoring their budget. But until then they will have a P1,000 budget,” he said.
In February, Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez filed a bill abolishing the ERC after the suicide of ERC Director Francisco Jose Villa, Jr. who left notes alleging shady deals and irregular practices in the agency.
