Recto hopes next DICT chief will make PH fast, reliable internet a reality
Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto on Friday urged President Duterte to appoint a new Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) who will help realize reliable internet connection in the country.
“Duterte should make sure that the new DICT secretary he appoints will not only be able to realize this campaign promise of his but also work in making internet fast and reliable,” he said.
Recto authored and sponsored the law creating the DICT and the Free Public WiFi Act, the provisions of which goes beyond installation of public WiFi access points but also provide for improving internet speed, better broadband services and slash the red tape that retards ICT growth in the country.
The law for the free WiFi project has been allotted P4.81 billion and is projected to cover 13,024 sites in 1,489 towns by the end of the year.
Duterte himself announced Thursday that DICT Sec. Rodolfo Salalima has already resigned but did not offer any explanation except that the latter was prompted to quit out of delicadeza.
The President said he is now looking for the best replacement for Salalima who was behind efforts to bring WiFi internet connection to the public and spearheaded the creation of the blueprint for the national broadband plan.
