Meralco eyes partnership with PNOC, other energy firms

Power utility giant Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) is open to partnering with the state-run Philippine National Oil Co. or with other private entities to enter the gas sector.

Meralco president Oscar Reyes said the group, which is developing solar, coal plants, was also looking to develop gas, whether piped gas or liquefied natural gas (LNG).

“We indicated with PNOC our interest in any of their development. We’re always willing to partner with anybody who can add value,” Reyes said.

The Batangas LNG project of the government should start construction next year to ride the LNG wave in the global scene, Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi said earlier.

The completion of the Batangas LNG Terminal by 2020 is aimed to safeguard against the anticipated depletion of the Malampaya gas facility in 2024.
