Customs suspends tax-free perks for balikbayan boxes
As much as they want to extend the privilege, the requirements need to be reviewed first.
The Bureau of Customs announced that it is suspending guidelines on tax exemptions for consolidated balikbayan boxes amid confusion among overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
In a statement, Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapeña said they are temporarily holding the tax-free privilege for balikbayan shipments given “numerous complaints on the tedious requirements of the bureau to be granted with duty and tax exemption.”
Under the rules, OFWs can get exempted from paying taxes only if they accomplish the Information Sheet, submit a photocopy of the Philippine passport, a copy of invoice, and proof of purchase of the goods contained in the box to be qualified for the P150,000 tax exemption.
“Although it is our duty to facilitate customs clearance of balikbayan boxes, we cannot set aside the sentiments of our fellow Filipinos abroad,” the Customs chief said.
The rules are deemed on hold until March 31, 2018.
