TransCo proposal may boost competition in telco industry – Gatchalian
Allowing the National Transmission Corp. (TransCo) to venture into telecommunications services could usher in competition in the sector dominated by PLDT and Globe, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian said.
“I think in the short term, we can allow TransCo to operate a fiber optic backbone just to induce competition in the sector,” he said.
TransCo president Melvin Matibag earlier said they were planning to ask Congress to amend the state-run firm’s charter to include telecommunications services using the power grid’s existing facilities.
He said TransCo’s diversification would help government with its national broadband plan.
