Who’s protecting who? Why Glen Rice Jr. turned his ire on MVP’s PBA point man

Katropa Glen Rice, Jr. caused an uproar during game 4 versus the Barangay Ginebra which led to his ejection and a P26,000 fine, but his behavior was out of line as far as TNT alternate governor Patrick Gregorio is concerned.

The feisty Rice said he lost his cool over Ginebra rookie Kevin Ferrer during the first quarter of the game, which ended with him pushing the Ginebra rookie and throwing him the ball as he laid on the floor.

Rice even turned against Gregorio after the latter tried to calm him down, saying that the team chief and Manuel Pangilinan’s trusted basketball guy was out to protect Ferrer’s ass.

Little did he know that Gregorio simply knew that Ferrer would not have acted the way Rice did, as Ferrer’s background showed that he was not as volatile as the rogue import.

Quinito Henson writes: “All Gregorio wanted to do was to diffuse the tension and save Rice from getting into any more trouble. Gregorio had assured Rice that Ferrer would never hurt him but would play mind games to unsettle him.”

Henson bared the ties that bind Gregorio and Ferrer: the ex-PBA head is a close friend of Efren Bellarmino, owner of the Plantation Bay in Cebu who happens to be the father of Ferrer’s girlfriend who are known to be a reputable family.

Now, it seems Rice has gained more foes than friends at a low point in his career. Can he ever bounce back?

TNT import Glen Rice Jr will leave Manila tomorrow and it doesn’t look like he’ll ever be invited back … what a waste of talent, said TNT alternate governor and former PBA chairman Patrick Gregorio who took care of Rice like a son … Gregorio said TNT took a risk in bringing in Rice who has a tainted past but after doing due diligence, figured he was worth the gamble because of his enormous talent and everyone deserves a second chance … Rice promised to behave and with Gregorio’s guidance, seemed on the way to complete reform … in Game 3 of the Ginebra series, he shot 44 pts and in Game 4, had 2 pts 3 rebs 5 assts when with 1:41 left in the 1st period, he snapped! Rice, who had been advised by Gregorio to stay focused and play through physical defense, lost his cool in throwing down Kevin Ferrer then pitching the ball to him as he lay on the floor, prompting 2 technicals for an automatic ejection … Gregorio had told Rice he was the best import in town and could be TNT’s resident import if he played true to form … as Gregorio tried to pacify Rice after his ejection, Rice accused him of protecting Ferrer which was farthest from the truth … all Gregorio wanted to do was to diffuse the tension and save Rice from getting into any more trouble … Gregorio had assured Rice that Ferrer would never hurt him but would play mind games to unsettle him … Gregorio can vouch for Ferrer because he’s a close friend of Plantation Bay Cebu COO Efren Bellarmino who’s the father of Ferrer’s girlfriend EmEm … Gregorio knows the Bellarmino family closely including EmEm and her sister who is his wedding goddaughter … Gregorio said he’s sad that Rice blew the chance that TNT gave him for a new lease on life … Gregorio said in Game 4, TNT was up by 15 early and was in control until Rice’s outburst … we were on the way to force a Game 5 when the bubble burst, he said … the consolation was TNT has emerged as a new team with a bright future with Troy Rosario and RR Pogoy as the future stars and Jayson Castro continuing as the leader! Meanwhile, it’s goodbye to Rice! @talkntexttropangtexter @pbaconnect #pbagovernorscup2017
