Ayala-MPIC group develops e-jeepney payment system
AF Payments Inc., a consortium comprising Ayala Corp. and Metro Pacific Investments Corp., has put in place an electronic payment system for the government’s public utility jeepney program.
“We have developed a beep card service that is affordable to jeepney operators and will surely be appreciated by commuters in Metro Manila who have already purchased 4 million beep cards,” said Peter Maher, president of AF Payments.
Beep card is a tap-and-go payment system accepted in the country’s major railways (LRT 1, LRT 2, and MRT 3), Manila-Cavite Expressway and North Luzon Expressway. It is also available at select bus lines, FamilyMart, and Robinsons Movieworld branches and reloadable and valid for up to four years.
Under the government’s PUV modernization program, transport cooperatives and corporations can avail of financial assistance, on top of a government subsidy, to upgrade their fleet with low-carbon emission, safe and efficient units.
The program seeks to upgrade some 200,000 jeepneys over 15 years old with the modern PUV over the next three years.
