Diokno says Congress nod needed for double pay for soldiers, cops
This is what’s keeping the promise from turning into reality.
Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno said the Duterte government is trying its best to fulfill the President’s promise of raising the take-home pay of soldiers and the police, but noted that Congress still needs to approve the plan before it can be implemented.
“The commitment is to double [military and uniformed personnel’s] salaries by January 2018. We are doing everything to honor that commitment,” Diokno said in a press briefing.
He clarified that the Executive has already done its part by preparing the draft resolution for Congress to consider, but this has not been approved yet.
The measure was forwarded to the House of Representatives and Senate on Sept. 20.
“We need the approval of both houses of Congress to implement this,” Secretary Diokno said, “because Congress has the power of the purse.”
All eyes should now be on the Legislative.
