ICTSI to spend $100M to expand Iraq’s Basra port

International Container Terminal Services Inc. is investing an additional $100 million to expand the Basra Gateway Terminal in Iraq where port development is picking up pace.

The expansion, which marks the second major development phase for BGT, a subsidiary of ICTSI,
will involve the construction of two new berths with a 20-hectare yard area. This will double BGT’s container handling capacity to 1.2 million TEUs in 18 months.

Configured and equipped with quay and landslide container handling systems, the berths will be able to handle container vessels of up to 10,000 TEUs.

The BGT project is Iraq’s largest and only deep-water port and the main gateway to the Iraqi market.

In April 2014, ICTSI was awarded the concession to take over the government of Iraq’s container terminal in Umm Qasr as well as construct the new berth.
