BSP should continue operations despite Metro Manila- ASEAN holiday on Nov 13 to 15 – Koko
Senate President Koko Pimentel on Tuesday called on Malacanang to exclude from work suspension the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) to ensure that check clearing operations would remain uninterrupted.
President Rodrigo Duterte has declared Nov. 13 to Nov. 15 as special non-working days in Metro Manila, Bulacan and Pampanga due to the country’s hosting of the 31st Association of Southeast Asian (Asean) Summit and Related Meetings.
The Asean Summit is expected to be attended by world leaders, including US President Donald Trump.
“When check clearing operations are suspended, this disrupts the operations of many businesses who receive payments or must make payments,” Pimentel said.
He said that another consequence of the suspension of check clearing operations was the suspension of the operations of the Philippine Stock Exchange and the country’s banks.
“I understand that jeepney strikes and activities like the Asean hosting make it extremely inconvenient for government employees to report for work,” Pimentel said.
“But just as vital government operations like law enforcement and agencies like the MMDA (Metro Manila Development Authority) remain operational during situations like these, so must a critical agency like the BSP remain open so that the business of doing business is not affected,” he said.
