PH, China working on ‘second basket’ of infra projects
The Philippines and China government are working to identify a “second basket of infrastructure projects” on top of the deals that both countries have sealed in previous meetings between President Rodrigo Duterte and Xi Jinping.
This was revealed in a forum Saturday by Chinese embassy counselor Ethan Sun who did not give details of the projects being eyed in the second wave of partnerships between the two countries.
Sun said the goal of both countries was to synergize China’s Belt and Road Initiative with Duterte’s “Build, Build, Build” strategy.
So far, Sun said China has pledged to build two bridges over the Pasig Riverto help relieve traffic pressure in Metro Manila and finance feasibility studies for the construction of Davao City expressway and a bridge linking Panay, Guimaras and Negros, he added.
China is expected to provide concessional loans for the country’s three priority infrastructure programs, namely the new water resource Kaliwa dam, Chico river pump irrigation project and the south line of the North-South railway.
Speaking in Filipino, Sun said China believed in the Filipino value that “true friends are there in times of need.”
