New RE policy to displace expensive power in off-grid areas
The Department of Energy (DOE) is working on Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) specifically for off-grid areas to spur socio-economic development in these areas.
The RPS mandates power industry players to produce and source a certain percentage of electricity from renewable energy sources.
Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi said the proposed RPS rules for off-grid areas would contribute to the growth of the renewable energy industry through increased development and utilization of RE resources in the countryside.
Currently, off-grid areas mainly use expensive fuel, such as diesel, in electricity generation.
“Ultimately, we see this to spur socio-economic development and help address environmental concerns,” he said.
