PCC to scrutinize TransCo’s plan to diversify into telco

The National Transmission Corp.’s (TransCo) plan to enter the telco sector will go through the Philippine Competition Commission (PCC).

“That would, obviously, have to take the competition lens,” said PCC chairman Arsenio Balisacan.

PCC can also work together with TransCo in forming the policy since they also have an advisory role, Balisacan said.

“Since this is a government project, PCC is [part of] government, we need to work closely together,” he said.

TransCo president Melvin Matibag earlier said the state-run firm wanted to diversify into the telecommunications services using the power grid’s existing facilities.

He said this plan was already approved in principle by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi.
