Smart, Globe told to offer free calls, texts to displaced Marawi residents

The National Telecommunications Commission has ordered telecommunication companies and its regional office in Cagayan de Oro to offer free call and text services to Marawi City evacuees for seven days from Oct. 31.

Displaced families can inform their relatives, both here and abroad, of any further assistance needed. The evacuees can also inform their loved ones of their safety and plans regarding their eventual return to Marawi City.

According to reports, more than 300,000 people were displaced by the conflict.

The “Libreng Text at Tawag” service includes free NDD and overseas calls and will be expanded to include other evacuation centers in the coming the days.

The NTC’s effort was implemented in cooperation with Globe, Smart and various amateur and civic radio groups, namely, Race9, ACTS Radio Club and KABALIKAT.
