BIR, Customs to form regional task force vs smuggling

It’s a more thorough anti-smuggling drive.

Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III has ordered the creation of inter-agency task force groups to “unify” anti-smuggling operations in local ports.

The Cabinet official tasked Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapeña to lead coordination talks with the Bureau of Internal Revenue along with other government agencies to police shipments at the regional level, going beyond the usual monitoring carried out at the national level.

“They have to be meeting regularly on the regional level, not only in the national headquarters (in Manila),” Dominguez said in a statement, noting that most of the illegal shipments entering the country are being sold outside Metro Manila.

With this plan, importers should have a hard time finding arrangements to smuggle their illicit goods into the Philippines.
