DOE eyeing options for Bataan nuclear plant
The Department of Energy is exploring other options for the mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP).
Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi said the issue involving the BNPP was close to getting a closure and that the results of a review being done by Russian and Slovenian experts would be used in forming the national position on the idle facility.
“As the authority, we have to put a closure to it. Are we going to proceed and make it a nuclear power plant? If we are not going to operate it as a nuclear power plant, then what are we going to do with the structure? What are we going to do with the property?,” he said.
Cusi said the BNPP could be transformed into a bomb shelter, library, hotel or a data center if assessments would not favor using the plant as a power generating facility.
The Philippines is expected to come out with its position by December, energy officials earlier said.
