Where would PH be without Aboitizes, Ayalas? Duterte says these are rich families who give back

President Rodrigo Duterte absolutely abhors oligarchs but he thinks the Aboitiz and Ayala families are one of the few exceptions.

In a speech in Davao City Saturday, Duterte said praised the Aboitizes and Ayalas for their “sense of responsibility” to give back part of their wealth to communities that were the sources of their wealth.

“Coming over here, I passed by Davao Light, and sometimes, I would get struck by nostalgia and I was — pa-left turn ako dito nakita ko itong Abreeza and I was wondering what would have happened to Davao City were it not for the enterprising family of Aboitiz,” said Duterte.

Duterte’s family migrated from Cebu to Davao in 1949 shortly after Don Ramon Aboitiz took over Davao Light which primarily provided lighting to the emerging post-war Davao community.

Duterte also cited how the Ayala family converted 950 hectares of raw land into “a beautiful city”, Makati, the country’s premiere central business district.

“Nakita ko kung wala ang Aboitiz, paano kaya tayo ngayon and so also with the Ayala, the family. Ito ‘yung mga tao na gumagamit talaga. There’s no doubt about it, they are imbued with the sense of responsibility sa kapwa tao nila,” he said.

“Maybe because along the way, you get so… pera, marami na and they begin to think of what will happen when you die. Hindi mo naman madala sa langit, lalo na sa impyerno, kukunin ni Satanas ‘yan,” he added.

Duterte said the driving force for these families were to give back not for the people to remember them but for a sense of fulfillment.
