Pernia commits improvements for Internet, telcos under Duterte

The Duterte administration will work towards improving digital connectivity.

Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia said the government will be working to improve information and communications technology (ICT) to improve “nation-building,” acknowledging that it will improve inclusivity, security, and efficiency across people and sectors.

“To create economic opportunities, the government will facilitate the faster and strategic roll-out of ICT infrastructure in order to meet the growing demand for structures and services, particularly in underserved areas,” Pernia said during the Asia Pacific Forum 2017.

The Philippines is currently ranks 71st on the 2016 United Nations E-Government Development Index, and is 89th of 137 countries in terms of preparedness for online shopping and e-commerce.

“We are confident that we can improve on these figures,” Pernia said, noting that a financial technology revolution is underway.
