Em Aglipay-Villar showcases Binakul at Marcos-Manglapus wedding
The wife of DPWH secretary Mark Villar aptly pays tribute to the Ilocano art of loom by wearing Binakul at the wedding of Atty. Michael Ferdinand Marcos Manotoc and his wife Carina Amelia Manglapus.
Celebrating the Ilocano roots of the bride and groom, DIWA party-list representative Em Aglipay-Villar proudly wore her Ivarluski Aseron top made of binakul weave.
“Wear your culture. The binakul weave is a variation of the abel, the weave of Ilocos that was popular at the end of the 19th century. I am wearing a whirlwind pattern in black and white. Making the textile is a difficult and cumbersome process that takes months to make. But the end product – a beautiful work of art in geometric, optical designs that is uniquely Filipino – makes it all worth it. It’s sad that this art is slowly dying because it can’t compete with factory manufactured weaves. I hope we can support our local industries that promote Filipino culture,” @emaglipayvillar said.
Sec. Mark must be very proud to bring his very fashionable and very culturaly-conscientious date!
