Redundant: Lapeña plucks out Customs gate pass checkers

They’re unnecessary lines for red tape.

Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapeña ordered the removal of bureau personnel manning terminal gates in container ports, after he realized that these guys are no longer needed in manning cargo shipments.

Lapeña discovered this as he conducted a walk-through inspection at the Manila International Container Port on Monday, Nov. 27, where he realized that passes being checked by these gatekeepers have already been cleared.

“What they actually do is redundant, because port operators already have a working system to check the entry and exit of containers. If the trucks are given the go-signal to leave the terminals, then we have to release them from the ports at once,” Lapeña said.

A digital barcode system in place renders their work useless.
