Make or break: DOTr should make sure it gets the right maintenance provider for MRT this time
Senator Grace Poe on Thursday said Sumitomo Corp. might not be the only maintenance provider or “even the best one” to rehabilitate the Metro Rail Transit (MRT).
This is why, she said, the government must ensure that the terms of the contract for whichever provider is hired, are not disadvantageous to the people, and transparent.
She made the remark after the Department of Transportation (DoTr) announced that it was set to ink a three-year deal with Sumitomo to rehabilitate the MRT system.
Poe, however, clarified that she welcomed the prospects of having Sumitomo back on its role to maintain the MRT system.
“Given the good track record of Sumitomo when it maintained the MRT for the first 12 years before the system went through a ‘teleserye’ of unfortunate events, the prospect of having a reputable maintenance provider back is encouraging and a step in the right direction,” she said.
