Win to DoTr: Privatizing MRT3 is most viable long-term option
Sen. Win Gatchalian suggested that the government fully privatize the operations of the EDSA-Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT3) instead of just making piecemeal efforts to improve its operations.
“The privatization of the MRT remains to be the most viable long-term option to improve its quality of service. A short-term contract with Sumitomo (Corp.) would be best, so that potential buyers will be able to have a free hand regarding future maintenance operations,” he said.
The senator has backed the plan of the Department of Transportation (DoTr) to bring back Sumitomo Corp. as maintenance provider for the MRT in place of the disgraced Busan Universal Rail Inc.
Sumitomo’s contract was terminated in 2012 by the Aquino government and had it replaced by Busan Universal Rail Inc. (BURI) which was likewise terminated by the present administration due to service interruptions.
Gatchalian noted that the Japanese company has a respectable reputation in the industry.
“As the original maintenance provider of MRT3, they must surely be equipped with necessary expertise to help fix the recurring ailments of the rail system,” he said.
The DoTr, the senator stressed, should still exercise prudence in setting the terms of agreement insofar as maintenance service contract is concerned.
