BSP eyeing braille features for peso coins, bills

It’s their way of helping out the blind.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has released updated designs for bills with the hopes of enhancing their security features versus counterfeiters. New designs for Philippine coins are also being prepared for circulation by January 2018, as part of the regular cycle.

Now, the central bank is considering to raise the bar further as it looks into embedding braille elements to help the blind distinguish money by themselves.

In a statement, the BSP said they are considering “further enhancements” to the local currency by including braille marks on the surface of notes and coins, for the benefit of the visually impaired.

Will we see this turn into reality? Stay tuned.
