Danding: I’ll give golden trophies to UAAP champions as long as I’m alive
Bilyonaryo Danding Cojuangco is feeling generous and will give out a golden trophy for the country’s best college basketball players to savor their shining moment in the UAAP as long as he’s “still alive.”
Cojuangco agreed to lavish the next UAAP seniors men’s basketball championships with a P2.7 million, 14-karat gold trophy.
This is the same hardware the La Salle alumnus gave the Ateneo Blue Eagles who won the thrilling UAAP 80 Finals against the Green Archers last Sunday.
In an Instagram post, basketball guru Quinito Henson said: “Mr. Cojuangco will donate the championship trophy for 6 years, starting this season … the UAAP Board has asked if the trophy could be given the next 8 years since there are 8 UAAP schools and Mr. Cojuangco agreed.”
In his Philippine Star column, Henson quoted the 82-year old Cojuango as saying he’d give trophies “for as long as I’m still alive.”
Aside from the annual golden prize, Henson said Cojuangco’s San Miguel Corp. has also pledged a “perpetual trophy” to be given to UAAP teams who won the championship three times.
The grand slam trophy will be bigger (17 inches versus the regular 15 inches) and more expensive (P5.8 million).
“The trophies are a symbol of what the UAAP schools are fighting for,” Henson said.
