Oligarch mga ‘yan, di yan magugutom! Duterte shutters Consunji logging firm which caused killer flashfloods in Zamboanga
President Rodrigo Duterte has suspended the operations of the logging subsidiary of the Consunji family after its operations led to a disaster in Zamboanga Peninsula during the onslaught of typhoon “Vinta.”
During the late night Cabinet meeting in Malacanang which lasted up to 11:00 p.m., Duterte ordered Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Roy Cimatu to issue a closure order against Sodaco Agricultural Co. owned by the Consunji family. Another logging firm, the Sirawai Plywood and Lumber Corporation in Sibuco town, was also ordered suspended.
The Consunji firm earned the President’s ire after he saw a video footage of the massive flooding in the province due to Sodaco’s logging operations.
“Roy, ipasara mo ‘yan. Hindi naman maghihirap ‘yang si Consunji kasi oligarch na ‘yan,” said Duterte who asked Cimatu to go immediately to Zamboanga and enforce the closure order.
Piñol was shocked by the widespread destruction in Sibuco town in a visit last Jan. 4. Piñol said the Consunji firm operates a 60,000-hectare logging concession under the DENR’s Integrated Social Forestry program for more than a decade. Piñol claimed that the Consunji firm had cleared the area of tree because he planned to convert it into a palm oil plantation.
