Awkward: Duterte makes sales pitch for Toyota, Isuzu while accepting Mitsubishi donation from Japan

‎If he was to pick one ride, President Rodrigo Duterte said he’d choose a Japanese pick-up truck.

Too bad for Mitsubishi, ‎Duterte revealed that his personal choice was either Toyota or Isuzu.

Duterte made the sales pitch for Mitsubishi’s rivals during a ceremony in Davao City where the Japanese ambassador donated 26 Montero police patrol vehicles ‎to the local police.

“My car has always been a pickup until now. It is a pickup. It’s either — no free advertisement — Isuzu or Toyota. Those are really the durable ones built to suit the political terrains up to the mountains. Huwag lang pilitin kasi masisira talaga,” said Duterte in a speech Monday.

Duterte said the local police should consider themselves lucky for getting a Montero which he considered a “luxury vehicle.”

“They are not cheap. They are hard to come by in a lifetime of a city and the one that’s given to you is almost a luxury car to us. Montero, for the average Filipino, is a luxury car. And yet, it is given by way of donation for the use of the police. I expect the — with that kind of quality,” said Duterte.

He urged the police to maintain the units properly and probably hire a civilian pro to drive it.”I should say that it should last for more than, with proper maintenance, mga 50 years siguro,” said Duterte in jest.
