Smart’s aggressive data rollout pays off as LTE data usage grows three-fold

Smart Communications Inc. said long-term evolution (LTE) data traffic tripled last year as the number of LTE devices latched on its network grew significantly.

Year-on-year, the number of LTE devices used on the Smart network jumped 102 percent, while LTE data traffic surged 204 percent nationwide.

Smart posted notable increases in LTE data traffic in Cebu and Davao, growing by 219 percent 75 percent, respectively.

LTE data traffic in Pampanga went up by 130 percent, while LTE data traffic in Bulacan jumped by 244 percent largely due to the ongoing rollout of LTE sites in the area.

“The results of our network upgrades are evident. More and more customers are making the leap to LTE where they enjoy faster internet speeds,” said Mario G. Tamayo, P senior vice president for Network Planning and Engineering at Smart.

PLDT chief revenue officer Eric Alberto said the group’s “investments in improving network have made world-class mobile internet connectivity within the reach of many Filipinos.”

To make more LTE handsets available to the market, Smart has partnered with device manufacturers to encourage customers to shift to LTE handsets, particularly those running on 700 MHz.

Smart LTE has consistently led in speeds across the country, according to international wireless coverage research firm OpenSignal.
