It’s a go: PH, Japan target 2022 opening for Manila subway

Change is coming underground.

The Philippines and Japan are looking forward to open Manila’s first-ever subway system by the time President Duterte steps down in 2022.

Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III said the two nations are working to fast-track the rollout of the Metro Manila Subway project, with the first loan line expected to be signed in March this year.

This will pave the way for the bidding of the construction project.

“The first tranche for the loan for the Metro Manila subway is due for signing in March 2018. Both sides agreed to work toward the partial operability of the subway line by 2022 at the latest,” Dominguez said during a press briefing after the fourth Philippines-Japan Joint Committee on Infrastructure Development and Economic Cooperation held in Cebu.

The 2022 target is way ahead of the original 2025 goal of the Department of Transportation.
