MVP accuses Duterte of lying: PLDT-Smart never asked P3B for frequency
Businessman Manny V. Pangilinan effectively accused President Rodrigo Duterte of lying by disputing the Chief Executive’s claim that PLDT-Smart asked for P3 billion to return the frequency it got for free from the government.
In an interview aired by GMA News Tuesday (February 20), Pangilinan said there was no truth to the allegation that PLDT-Smart held on to the frequency through the shell company CURE to avoid competition from coming in.
“That we’re holding on to the frequency to this day, that’s not true. That we said you have to pay us X for us to be able to return the frequency to you, there’s no such thing,” he said.
Duterte recently scored PLDT-Smart for demanding P3 billion for the return of the frequency, which the government plans to give to China Telecoms, the third player seen to break the duopoly in the local telco industry.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque famously quoted Duterte as saying during a Cabinet meeting that PLDT-Smart should not “fuck with government.”
After Roque publicized Duterte’s threat, PLDT-Smart announced it will return the frequency of CURE for free.
