LOOK: Friends na nga! Duterte meets Lucio Tan in Palace
President Rodrigo Duterte proved he has buried the hatchet with Lucio Tan by meeting the Chinoy bilyonaryo in Malacañang on Wednesday (February 21).
Tan was among the top Filipino executives who joined Duterte during a courtesy call of Philippine and Japan companies at the Palace.
One of the photos released by Malacañang showed Tan smiling as he shook Duterte’s hand.
Only last year, Duterte publicly lambasted Tan over the billions in unpaid taxes his companies allegedly owe the government. The President threatened to shut down NAIA Terminal 2, which is exclusively used by Philippine Airlines if the flag carrier did not pay its P7-billion tax liabilities within 10 days.
PAL paid the government P6 billion for the navigational charges it accumulated over the years.
But earlier this month, Duterte had a change of heart about Tan after the taipan offered a special PAL flight to bring home distressed Filipino workers from Kuwait.
The President said he will no longer bring up Tan’s tax liabilities.
“Because of this incident, Mr. Lucio Tan, I’m going to shut up forever. Wala ka nang marinig sa akin na salita na ‘di ka — hindi ka nagbayad ng… Okay na sa akin, tapos na,” he said in a speech on February 13.
