Lucio Tan wants to take on Ayalas in Boracay with new drainage system
Lucio Tan wants to build a second drainage system in Boracay to complement his water supply business, Malacañang said.
In a radio interview Sunday (March 25), Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Tan has written to concerned government agencies about his proposal.
“Dahil meron naman siyang Boracay 2B doon, nagsu-supply siya ng tubig pero wala siyang sewerage system. Ang sabi niya siya ang gagawa ng drainage,” Roque said.
Roque said that under Tan’s proposal, the drainage system will be connected to a wastewater treatment plant.
“Ibig sabihin, tubig ulan, discharge ng kung kani-kanino, mate-treat na siya, hindi na deretso sa lawa ang labas,” he explained.
Tan will become a direct competitor of the Ayalas if his proposed sewerage system pushes through.
The Ayalas, together with the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (Tieza), own the Boracay Island Water Corp Inc., which provides water and sewerage system on the island.
The Departments of Interior and Local Government, Tourism and Environment and Natural Resources recently recommended the six-month closure of Boracay beginning April for rehabilitation.
The island, which is famous for its powdery white sand, has been described as a “cesspool” by President Rodrigo Duterte for the waste released by commercial establishments into the sea.
