Xi Jinping’s promise to Duterte: China will be ‘extra generous’ if PH agrees to joint exploration of South China Sea
China President Xi Jinping has promised to be “extra generous” if President Rodrigo Duterte would agree to strike a joint exploration agreement in the disputed South China Sea.
Duterte said this was the message he got from Xi during their meeting at the sidelines of the Boao forum last week.
“They are now offering joint exploration and from the mouth of the President of China, sabi niya, ‘then exploration, maybe we can be extra generous’,” said Duterte.
Duterte did not reveal how China would show its generosity although he has praised Xi for his donations of firearms, drug rehabilitation facilities, bridges, and cheap loans on top of multi-billion investments, tourism flows, and access to China’s labor and domestic market.
“All that China needs actually is the cooperation. ‘Yun lang. Open your doors if you want something done in your country, if you are inviting us here to invest, we will invest. And if you do not have the resources, we will do it for you. And if you say that if you have the money to pay, pay us in a short term. If you do not have the money, pay us on a long term. Ganoon,” said Duterte.
