New telco player needs P200B capital to be legit

It won’t be easy to fulfill this campaign promise.

Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III said the government cannot rush the entry of a new telecommunications service provider in the Philippines, however urgent it is to break the Smart-Globe duopoly.

Dominguez said a new telco player needs huge investments in order to stand a chance in the local scene, which he estimates should be at least P200 billion.

He added that connectivity needs to be assured via local infrastructure, which needs to be in place before any new firm gets in.

It’s a long and arduous process indeed.
