Meralco power supply deals must undergo Swiss challenge – DoE
Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi wants Manila Electric Co. to subject its controversial power supply agreements (PSAs) to a Swiss challenge.
These PSAs, which cover 3,551 megawatts or about 90 percent of Meralco’s power requirements in the next 20-25 years, have come under fire from lawmakers for allegedly skirting the mandatory competitive selection process (CSP).
The seven controversial PSAs entered into with Meralco-affiliated generation companies are pending the approval of the Energy Regulatory Commission.
“From my personal point of view, they should just subject it to Swiss Challenge if they’re confident that the rates are the lowest available. I’m representing the public here,” Cusi said.
“I’m not against Meralco. It’s (referring to Swiss challenge) just a good process I’m looking at affordability. I want assurance of supply until 2021,2022, 2030,”he said.
