No ifs or buts: Duterte won’t allow ecozones to grant casino licenses outside their perimeter walls
President Rodrigo Duterte is putting his foot down on economic zones granting casino licenses outside their area of jurisdiction.
Duterte said that he if he allowed Aurora Pacific Economic Zone and Freeport (Apeco) to grant casino licenses outside of the province, the situation could go “out of hand” with casinos going up in very corner.
“I have been trying to be patient with everybody. But there are always that opportunity to interpret a law or insist in your stupid proposition until the problem gets out of hand,” he said in a speech Monday.
Duterte publicly fired Government Corporate Counsel Rudolf Philip Jurado for upholding Apeco’s decision to grant a 75-year license to a casino outside the province.
Duterte said only the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. has the right to grant casino licenses in the country.
“Kung hindi ka pa naman gago. So you are just like a PAGCOR operating an independent entity with the same powers na you grant everything. Kung hindi ka tangang, puta,” he added
“When you are granted a franchise to conduct gambling in a certain facility, it does not include farming out that franchise to other cities and provinces,” said Duterte.
“Kasi pagka ganun then you can ramble on, following your theory, you can ramble on to give permits beyond the shores of Luzon and you can do it in Siasi, Jolo,” he added.
In his first few months in office, Duterte clamped down on online gaming casinos granted by Cagayanez Economic Zone Authority to jueteng lord Atong Ang.
