Ties that bind: Devanadera a Meralco consultant before ERC stint
She has made the crossover in a matter of months.
Incumbent Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) chairperson Agnes Devanadera has had a colorful past, and this includes careers in both politics and business.
The ERC chief has admitted to having worked as a consultant for a unit of bilyonaryo Manny Pangilinan’s Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), but maintained that she practices integrity and an arm’s length approach whenever the situation calls for it.
Devanadera said she has inhibited from voting on a power supply agreement (PSA) with Atimonan One Energy, Inc. which put up a 1,200-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Atimonan, Quezon — where she once served as mayor.
Devanadera, however, maintained that her consultancy stint was “very small.” Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGen) is the parent firm of the Atimonan plant.
Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate threatened that he will sue Devanadera and and ERC commissioners should they greenlight Meralco’s PSAs awarded to its subsidiaries which are worth trillions of pesos, saying these are nothing but sweetheart deals with exorbitant prices.
