PAL to halve free luggage allowance for local and London flights
Philippine Airlines is considering cutting by half its free baggage allowance for its domestic and London routes in an attempt to offset rising fuel costs.
In a petition filed with the Civil Aeronautics Board, the Lucio Tan-led airline sought the reduction of its free baggage allowance to 10 kilograms from 20 kg on its domestic flights.
PAL spokesperson Cielo Villaluna clarified that the reduction only covers promo fares on domestic flights.
“Those who wish to avail of lowest fares and are traveling light may avail of promo domestic fares which offer 10 kg of free baggage allowance,” she said.
For its London operations, PAL wants to cut the free baggage allowance from two pieces at 23 kg each to only 30 kg for economy class. For business class, the free luggage limit will be cut from 2 pieces at 32 kg eaach to only 40 kg.
“For London, PAL would like to shift from piece system to weight system. Under the piece system, an extra piece regardless of weight automatically is charged $150,” Villaluna said.
