Duterte explains why he still calls Manny Villar ‘sir’
He is the country’s most powerful person but President Rodrigo Duterte still calls bilyonaryo Manny Villar “sir.”
“When I was a Congressman, ang Speaker namin noon si sir Manny Villar. Kaya ako nagsi-sir sa kanya kasi siya ang aming Speaker,” said Duterte who was guest speaker during the launching of Villar’s Vista Mall in Iloilo City.
Duterte, who himself prefers to be called “mayor”, was representative of the first district of Davao City under the 11th Congress from 1998 to 2001 while Villar was then Speaker of the House.
Duterte, who counts Villar among his earlies campaign backers, has been profuse in his praise of the Tondo boy: “Finally, a Filipino has made it big time. Nagiging number one sa housing. And it’s everywhere in the Philippines. It’s the largest.”
“Born out of the desire to do good and give back to our communities, Vista Land Group has been able to put up neighborhoods in over a hundred locations nationwide. Pinaka malaki po. And what is very telling is that it is owned by a Filipino and with the heart,” said Duterte.
Duterte was impressed with the Vista Mall Iloilo and wished Villar could have built a similar mall in his home city Davao.
