Move on! MVP says sorry after FIBA blames his fave coach Chot Reyes, Gilas attack dogs for instigating brawl

Bilyonaryo Manny V. Pangilinan finally broke his silence 15 days after his Gilas attacks dogs instigated the worst basketball free-for-all in FIBA.

In a statement, Pangilinan said: “I, as do all of us, deeply regret the incident and apologize for our conduct in it. As well, we need to raise our hosting standards to ensure that the appropriate environment is established for games, and that we keep our traditional Filipino hospitality untarnished.”

Pangilinan urged critics to look forward and not dwell on the ugly incident which dominated headlines all over the world.

“The decision having been made, it is time for us to move on. This will include planning for our participation in future FIBA games, and potentially in the Asia Games,” said Pangilinan.

Pangilinan is the founding president of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Inc. and the real power behind Gilas.

FIBA, the governing body of international basketball, suspended not only 10 players in the melee and the coaching staff, it also suspended for one game and fined for P535,000 Pangilinan’s first choice national team head coach Vincent ‘Chot’ Reyes “for inciting unsportsmanlike behavior.”

SBP was also “sanctioned for the unsportsmanlike behavior of its delegation members and of its public, as well as for insufficient organization of the game” and fined a staggering P13.37 million.

The bad blood between Gilas and the Australian Boomers started a day before the July 2 match when Pangilinan vented his rage over this incident on Twitter:

Pangilinan met his ill-tempered and ill-bred Gilas boys in the dugout shortly after the brawl for a pep talk:

SBP chairman emeritus/FIBA Central Board member MVP and POC president Ricky Vargas in Gilas dugout after the Australia game with RR Pogoy, Baser Amer and JuneMar Fajardo (top left) … the ultimate prize is the FIBA World Cup trophy (top middle) … Gilas head coach Chot Reyes … (below left) Aussie fans with plastic kangaroo wearing boxing gloves … (below middle) Andray Blatche has committed to play for Gilas at the coming Asian Games in Indonesia … (below right) Gabe Norwood watches Chris Goulding with Jayson Castro at back … let’s hope this will never happen again and here’s wishing Australia and the Philippines the best of luck in the next qualifying round … let’s also hope this incident will make us realize the importance of respect, fair play and sportsmanship @fiba @samahangbasketbolngpilipinas @pbaconnect #fibaasiawcqualifiers
