Customs busts P3.4B shabu import from Malaysia
It’s one of the biggest drug busts ever recorded in history.
Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapeña’s magic touch has been unrelenting in busting smuggling across all ports.
In a statement, the Bureau of Customs said it tied up with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) — Lapeña’s old office — in busting a 500-kilogram shipment of shabu which came in from Malaysia.
The seized drugs arrived on June 28 at the Manila International Container Port but has been left unclaimed for a month, prompting authorities to examine the cargo.
“The consignee is not accredited by the Bureau of Customs. I believe he intends to smuggle this shipment without the clearing process of the BOC,” Lapeña said in a statement.
“They did not see any chance to smuggle this because of the intensified anti-smuggling operations and the constant alerting of the bureau. It will be very risky on their part if they will push through with the shipment.”
The drugs have been turned over to PDEA. This brings the total illegal drug shipments caught by Customs to nearly P4 billion this year.
