Gov’t to spend P1.5B for free wi-fi in 2019
That’s a pretty huge bill!
The Department of Budget and Management revealed that the 2019 budget carries a P5.1-billion provision for the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT). Of the amount, P1.5 billion is set aside to implement the free wi-fi project across public spaces as well as state universities and colleges.
“This will enable the public to avail of government online services anytime, anywhere,” Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno said in a statement.
The expectation is that the free connectivity will be used to avail online services from the Philippine Statistics Authority (birth and marriage certificates), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI clearance), Department of Social Welfare and Development (Persons with Disabilities Card), and Commission on Higher Education and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (scholarship and financial assistance).
Free Google and Facebook would be helpful, too.
