Walang originality! Sonny Dominguez’s brilliant suggestion to stop smuggling is already being done by Customs for decades

Finance Secretary Sonny Dominguez believes smuggling could be reduced if shipments were randomly checked at the ports– even if the Bureau of Customs has been doing the exact same thing for decades.

Dominguez suggested the random inspection of shipments during the Cabinet meeting Tuesday (November 6) in Malacañang.

He told President Rodrigo Duterte that the BOC does not have enough equipment to screen all shipments coming in from various ports across the country.

“We have over 180 ports in the Philippines and we cannot cover all of them because it’s just quite impossible to do it. So we have to do it again, opening by — at random, not using X-rays,” he said.

Aside from conducting random inspection of shipments, Dominguez said Duterte’s order for the deployment of military personnel at the BOC could also reduce smuggling.

“Under your order where we will second and detail people from other — other branches of government, I think will help because you know you will reduce the familiarity, you will introduce new people,” he told the President.

Dominguez, however, said soldiers who will be assigned to the BOC need to undergo training since the inspection of shipments is a technical process.
