PCC partners with ERC to keep tight lid on power deals

The Philippine Competition Commission has teamed up with the Energy Regulatory Commission to keep a tight rein on power supply deals.

The partnership’s goal is to prevent collusions and abuses of market dominance, which often cause sudden spikes in electricity rates.

“Our partnership allows for the sharing of information and coordination of enforcement actions toward a more robust competition landscape in the energy sector,” said PCC chair Arsenio M. Balisacan.

With the partnership, PCC and ERC can now carry out joint fact-finding inquiries and share data on power deals.

First on their agenda is to look into the spike in power rates in Luzon to check if it was due to legitimate power plant outages or if it was orchestrated to profit power generators.

“We are confident our combined expertise and investigative capacities will lead to a stronger push for competition enforcement in this critical sector,” Balisacan said.
