Deputy Speaker Mikee Romero said that preparations to host Southeast Asian Games athletes at his sprawling polo field in Calatagan, Batangas did not go smoothly as planned.
Romero, son of bilyonaryo Reghis Romero II, said that the budget to upgrade and enhance accommodations for SEA Games polo players came in late because the Senate approved the 2019 budget in May 2019.
Romero, a member of the Philippine national polo team competing in the SEA Games, said the Senate budget delay was the main reason for the problems in travel, hotel and food suffered by SEA Games athletes a few days before the start of the Games.
“If they (Senate) approved it and made the budget available in January, all of these mishaps might not have happened. You know yung delay sa construction, delay sa food,” said Romero.
“Even in my polo field we were hosting all the royalties of Brunei and Malaysia, ang dami ring delay because of the delay in the budget,” he added, Only four countries are participating in the polo events – Brunei, Malaysai, Indonesia and the Philippines. Matches will be played at Miguel L. Romero and Iñigo Zobel polo fields.
